The Qatar Olympic Committee has selected Grimshaw as the winner of a competition to design a series of recreational sports facilities across Qatar. Grimshaw's design utilizes a 'kit-of-parts' concept to provide adaptable sports centers which suit the different requirements of each site.
The Al Farjan Recreational Sports Facilities will each feature an elevated cafe at the center of the complex, around which football, volleyball, basketball and handball facilities can be added, as well as outdoor children’s playgrounds, public amenities and social areas.

The harsh desert climate of Qatar is mitigated in the social and recreational areas by fabric canopies, designed to be "visually reminiscent of the desert flowers native to Qatar", which provide shade and mark key routes to recreation and seating areas. In addition, these seating areas will be nestled into the dunescape to provide cool areas for relaxation.
In each complex, the canopies and shape of the site will be adjusted to direct cooling winds through the facilities. The design also employs a grey water recycling system to help irrigate the landscape.
Speaking about his design, Grimshaw Partner Keith Brewis said, "We are delighted to know our design will create highly accessible informal public space that enriches social activities while also developing athletic talent within the local community. This project provides an opportunity for Qatar to encourage all its residents to lead healthy lifestyles."
